Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
DBT is an evidenced based practice based on the research of Marsha Linehan for the treatment of individuals with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder and was developed to help individuals avoid self-harming actions, psychiatric hospitalizations, and severe relationship problems. Treatment consists of a series of skills training delivered within a group setting to be utilized within an individual’s daily life and reinforced in ongoing individual therapy with a trained clinician. DBT is an effective intervention but does require a level of commitment from the individual to engage over a period of time, to complete the required homework, and to replace poor coping approaches by learning new skills.
