CHW provides Supported Employment Services (SE) to eligible individuals through a contract with the Mental Health Association of Oregon. Supported Employment is an evidenced based practice for individuals with mental illness to assist them in achieving their employment goals.
Studies have consistently shown that upward of 70% of individuals with mental illness express an interest in gaining employment. Supported employment programs typically have employment rates of 40-50% and higher compared to minimal employment rates within typical mental health programs. Supported employment principles state that an individual’s expressed desire to work is the only criteria for admission. Rapid job search is key, along with individual preferences and competitive employment.
Supported employment occurs as a part of a treatment approach. SE specialists spend significant time doing job development with local employers. They maintain close relations with local Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Benefits counseling is provided. Job coaching is delivered onsite. Services are ongoing.
Clinicians can utilize the Supported Employment Brochure for general information or go SAMSHA for detailed information regarding the practice: http://mhaswo.org/
