Syphilis Cases On The Rise!

Syphilis is having a comeback this year. Coos County already has 55 confirmed cases this year. In a typical year, we have roughly eight confirmed cases.

Syphilis spreads by direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Syphilis symptoms can vary depending on the stage. The early stage can have a painless sore or rash. Later stages can cause serious health problems such as blindness, paralysis, and even death.

We urge sexually active individuals to use condoms during sexual activity, get tested regularly for STDs, and seek treatment if you suspect you have been exposed. Yes – it’s easily treatable, especially in the early stages!

Here are some resources to help you avoid contracting syphilis and testing and treatment options:

  • Order FREE condoms to your door www.onecondoms.com/pages/oregon
  • Order a FREE STI test kit at your door www.takemehome.org
  • Get tested at Coos Health & Wellness (if you don’t have symptoms), Waterfall Clinic, Coast Community Health Center, or your provider.
