Release of Ammonia in the Air in Charleston – December 20, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Release of Ammonia in the Air in Charleston

December 20, 2019

Due to the fire at the ice house in Charleston, there has been a release of ammonia into the air of the surrounding area.

Exposure to high concentrations of ammonia in air causes immediate burning of the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract and can result in blindness, lung damage or death. Inhalation of lower concentrations can cause coughing, and nose and throat irritation. Swallowing ammonia can cause burns to the mouth, throat and stomach.

Be advised to stay away from the Charleston area until Hazmat contains the situation. If you are exposed to ammonia in the air, seek immediate medical attention.
